Elizabeth in Madrid is in Madrid!!!

Hola tod@s!

After mega delays estoy en Madrid!!! :) I got here around 15:00 (or 3PM--they use 24 hour clock here so I am trying to mentally switch). A few days ago I got an email that my original host mom, Fina, is no longer able to host me and Larissa because of a medical issue. Get well soon Fina! So I was placed with Susana instead. All they told me was her address, her age, and that she has two kids--19 year-old Jaime y 22 year-old Sofia--and a dog. When I got here just Jaime was home. (And also Tina, see below.) We talked for a little while and he showed me around the apartment. I have my own room and bathroom, nice, and there's a balcony, even nicer. He goes to university here, but a different one than the one I'll be at. He says he likes all music--recent in his Spotify was Olivia Rodrigo (his favorite song is traitor, taste); I asked him if he likes Rosalía and Maluma and he gave an enthusiatic yes to both (again, taste). He loves soccer, his favorite team is Real Betis (de La Liga). But he was studying for his driver's license test, so I let him get back to that, and I went and unpacked, read, called my mommy :) and generally chilled out for a little bit.

Susana got home at around 21:00 (9PM). She's so nice; I love her. She works at IKEA, that's why she was home late. She also works as a real estate agent. She likes the scarf I made her and says I have to teach her how (thank you Nanna). We talked for a little and then went out to dinner. (To the linguistics homies on the blog, she asked me if I like "hacer footing" and I was like "HACER FOOTING???!!!?!?!?!" because I know people say that but I've never heard it in the wild before! Anyway it sounded like I was really excited about running and then I said, "No, no me gusta hacer footing." But hacer footing!!!) Her daughter, Sofia, doesn't live at home, but she lives in the city and is over a lot. Susana says she's excited to meet me. I'm also excited to meet her, she sounds cool. She goes to the same university I'll go to (Complutense) and she's studying fine arts. Susana says she is "una modernista, demasiado modernista" (a modernist, too modern). She's vegetarian (I explained that I am also ""vegetarian"") (as in pescatarian but also probably going to eat chicken soon (and "soon" was sooner than I thought, like an hour later was "soon")). She has a lot of tattoos and one half of her hair is one color and the other half is another color (note for Jan: I'm getting ideas...). Susana also says the whole rest of her family lives close to here, but they're on vacation, but I'll meet them later.

At the bar!!! Dad, I might be a beer person now. That beer I had was really good. I've never once for a second gotten the appeal, but now I'm on board.

Chicken :) Vegetarian era over.

Don't know what this is. I asked and I didn't know the word. I might also not know the word in English. It's not octopus or calamari. But it is like tiny fried seafood something. It was good.

This is Tina. She is old and gets nervous. I told them about Fresca and that's how I learned Prozac is the same in Spanish and English. She also steals socks. I told them about Puli (evil rat dog).

When we got back I took a shower and now I'm writing this. Susana is going to be working tomorrow so I'll be on my own during the day. I don't know what Jaime's doing tomorrow. (I'll ask him after I post this, right now Real Betis is playing and he is very focused on that.) I will probably walk around, see what's up, vibe. El Prado is a mere 45 minute walk from here... that is kinda calling my name. El Prado <3<3<3 Monday is when orientation for my program starts, so until then my time is my own.

Hasta mañana!

Spain VS USA

For fun, I started keeping a list a month or so before my time in Madrid was up of what I would miss but what I was excited to get back...
